The Poverty Of Being Unwanted, Unloved And Homeless

â€Å"We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.† -Mother Teresa Mother Teresa’s quote speaks volumes to me. When I read this I thought of our own community and those who live in it. Having first-hand experience of seeing the struggles the children have from diverse backgrounds in school when parents cannot help has made such an impact on me to where I feel as a teacher I need to take action. In this case study I will interview parents, a student, and the Director of Shepherd Community see the different views of all who are involve. While interviewing some parents of Shepherd Community, one of the things I kept hearing was they were so grateful to have a place like Shepherd. Most of our parents are Hispanic, lives below the poverty line, and lives in a multifamily home. One parent I interview wi th a help of a translator said, â€Å"I would love to help my daughter with her reading homework but I am not able to read English so I do not know if she is reading it right.† Another parent I interviewed who spoke English said, â€Å"I would love to come help out in the classroom but I cannot afford to take off work.† Finally, the last parent I interviewed also spoke Spanish and with the help of the translator, she said to me, â€Å"I am happy my daughter is learning English and doing well in school.
